President Buhari receives U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson

Mr Tillerson arrived in Abuja on Monday afternoon, having already made a brief stop in Chad after leaving Kenya this morning.

President Muhammadu Buhari and the U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met at the presidential villa, Abuja. The meeting started some few minutes after 4 p.m. after Mr. Buhari returned from an official visit to Benue State.

The two spoke on trade, security among others.

President Buhari thanked America for assistance rendered in the fight against insurgency, noting that Nigerian forces are good, “but need assistance in the areas of training and equipment.”

Buhari told visiting US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson that negotiations are underway to secure the release of hundreds of schoolgirls captured by Boko Haram terrorists.

“We are trying to be careful. It is better to get our daughters back alive,” the President said.

The visiting Secretary of State commended President Buhari on his strides in the anti-corruption war, to which the Nigerian leader responded that monies recovered are being invested on development of infrastructure.

Mr Tillerson said Nigeria was a very important country to the U.S, stressing: “You have our support in your challenges. We will also support opportunities to expand the economy, commercial investments, and peaceful polls in 2019.”

After the meeting with President Buhari, Mr. Tillerson hold a press conference with his Nigerian counterpart, Geoffrey Onyeama.

The U.S. Secretary of State is left the country after the press conference.

Tillerson is the highest ranking official in the Trump Administration to visit Nigeria.
