Ballon d’Or: Salah named sixth best, Mane ranked 22nd

The Liverpool stars were the only Africans on the shortlist and were rewarded for their efforts as Croatia star Luka Modric was named winner

Egypt international Mohamed Salah finished in sixth place in the 2018 Ballon d’Or rankings, the highest ranked footballer from the African continent.

Liverpool teammate and Senegal international Sadio Mane finished in tied for 22nd.

Both players helped their countries qualify for the 2018 World Cup, with Salah’s heroics sealing a return for Egypt after a 28-year absence.

Luka Modric claimed the top prize on the evening, while 2018 FIFA World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe was the first ever winner of the Kopa Trophy for the best player under the age of 21.

Norway’s Ada Hegerberg won the first ever Women’s Ballon d’Or following yet another outstanding season for club side Lyon.

Salah scored 44 goals across all competitions for Liverpool last season, playing an integral role in the Reds run to the Uefa Champions League final in Kiev.

His exploits were also felt in Europe where he netted 10 times to help Jurgen Klopp’s side to the Uefa Champions League final, where he was forced out with a shoulder injury and his team eventually lost to Real Madrid.

The 3-1 loss saw Mane score Liverpool eventual consolation effort, thus, becoming the first Senegal player to net in the showpiece.,
